If you’ve ever fabricated something by hand, you know how many times you go back and forth between the workbench and the vehicles to test fit and re-test fit until the part fits just right. Its immensely time consuming and you waste a lot of material in the process. We just purchased a tool that will solve all those issues, a brand new Handyscan 700 3D scanner from Creaform.

Creaform Handyscan 700 3D Scanner

This space-age looking device allows us to make an incredibly accurate 3D scans of OEM parts.

The Handyscan 700 uses optical lenses, that’s those rings of lights at the top and bottom, to triangulate reference targets. Reference targets are little stick-on dots you place over the object you’re scanning. As the scanner moves over the surface, it creates a model with a resolution of up to 0.025 mm or 0.0009 inch. That’s ¼ the thickness of a strand of hair! You can watch that process happen in our 3D scanner video.

From here the 3D scans are automatically imported into our CAD program of choice, Solidworks. In SolidWorks, we’re able to quickly model multiple designs and test them for drone, exhaust tone, and optimal flow. This is reverse engineering at its finest. We take all the R&D that the manufacturer did and then improve upon it.

Not only does this make our workflow faster, but it also reduces material waste by tenfold. We also model the fixtures in SolidWorks. A fixture is the platform that all future exhausts are built from, so precision is key to producing a consistent part that fits perfectly every time. Because the fixtures are built from a perfectly accurate SolidWorks model of the OEM parts, our parts fit exactly like the OEM parts do.
